The Shrine on Airline is receiving a $30 million renovation to convert the baseball stadium into a multi-use venue hosting football, soccer, concerts and more. Jefferson Parish is putting $15 million in pandemic relief funding toward the project. Executive Director of the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission Jerry Bologna said it is an investment in the community.
“It’s a real quality of life issue for us,” said Balogna. “We want to continue to bring these types of projects to the forefront, so that we continue to make Jefferson Parish a desirable place to live and enjoy events like this.”
Construction is scheduled to be completed in June of next year. While the stadium has already received interest from minor league football and soccer teams, its primary function will be a home for high school sports. Bologna said the renovation will add visitor sideline seating for the first time, a must for John Curtis and catholic league high school football.
“They have large draws, and they want to attract people to these games,” he said. “This is going to give them that first-class facility, not only for the players to enjoy playing in, but for the fans to view the games.”
The transformation will also add a stage to host concerts and festivals. Bologna hopes the investment in the Shrine will spur development along the Airline corridor. Bologna said an entertainment venue in the area has proven to be successful.
“In the very few occasions that the old Zephyr Stadium hosted concerts they were very well attended, and this is only going to help that,” Bologna said.
