A new state law requires agents to register with Louisiana if they are representing college or high school athletes in negotiating NIL deals. Attorney General Liz Murrill says the Athlete Agent Registration portal went live on July 1st.
“Anyone who is representing themselves as an agent for an athlete has to register through that portal, and they will have to go through some training,” Murrill said.
You can get to the portal by logging on to the Attorney General’s website: nil.ag.louisiana.gov.
“I’ve had some really great people helping build this process and this portal. We had an outside vendor that actually built the portal, and so it mirrors some of the portals that are being used in other states where they are require this registration,” Murrill explained.
Universities and high schools are encouraged to share information about agent registration requirements and athlete rights as a result of Senate Bill 389 that was approved earlier this year.
Murrill says that legislation gives her office the tools to ensure those who seek to profit from athletes are held to rigorous standards of conduct.
“Making sure that agents have some oversight as they are involved in basically negotiating NIL: Name, Image and Likeness contracts for athletes in this state,” Murrill noted.
A key requirement of the new law is mandatory background check and pre-registration education. Every agent applying for registration must complete the program before an application can be approved.
