LSU football players report for fall camp today. It will be head coach Lane Kiffin’s first preseason camp with the Tigers, and LSU’s rebuilt roster will need to build chemistry fast, especially on the offense. Tiger Rag editor Glenn Guilbeau says it starts with quarterback Sam Leavitt.
“I’m going to be looking at Sam Leavitt and see how he’s doing with his foot, but more importantly, with his arm. I remember when Matt Mauck was the quarterback, he had the same injury, and he was a pretty good running quarterback, too; and it did not impact him in 2003, and they won the national championship. But also, all the wide receivers and Trey’Dez Green; there’s a lot to look at,” Guilbeau said.
Kiffin brought in nine transfers and three freshmen wide receivers for Leavitt to throw to. Guilbeau says one or two of the newcomers in that crowded, talented room are going to separate themselves.
“What receivers come to the forefront? Lane Kiffin brought in nine of them. It’s going to be interesting to see which ones of those take the most snaps in practice. It’s probably going to be Jayce Brown and Jackson Harris to start with, but there’s a lot of guys there and there might be somebody that we’re not even thinking about,” Guilbeau noted.
Guilbeau says LSU’s roster is as talented as any on paper and Kiffin is a genius, but Tiger fans can’t expect a perfect season with how difficult LSU’s schedule is. They have back-to-back matchups with Ole Miss and Texas A&M in September, and Alabama and Texas in November.
“Regardless of if they lose this many or this many, they’re going to be a much better team on the field, and they’re going to be much more entertaining to watch; because they’re going to be able to run the ball and, therefore, are going to be able to pass the ball better. And their quarterback, I think, is going to better,” Guilbeau said.
