With football season getting underway, Governor Jeff Landry is alerting the public about a new state law that makes it a felony to smoke marijuana on a school campus or within 2,000 feet of school property. Landry says anyone convicted of violating the law could face up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
“This increases the penalty, especially for those who are in possession of marijuana and try to party with marijuana during our football season,” Landry noted.
Landry adds that claiming you didn’t know you were near a school is NOT a defense. Pollock Representative Gabe Firment authored the legislation after hearing football fans complaining about smelling marijuana smoke while tailgating.
“There is nothing more important than protecting our families, keeping kids safe, and I know this bill is going to be an important step in doing just that,” Firment said.
