Saturday is National Hunting and Fishing Day; and with Louisiana being “Sportsman’s Paradise,” it should go without saying that the state is very much participating. Trey Iles with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says events will be held at the Waddill Wildlife Refuge in Baton Rouge, Woodworth Shooting Range in Woodworth, the Tom Merrill Recreation Area in Haughton and Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Monroe.
“You can learn about conservation efforts that we do. You can learn about the habitat that animals and wildlife and fish live in. You can learn about the things that we’re doing to try to protect that habitat, as well as grow the sport of hunting and the sport of fishing in Louisiana,” Iles explained.
Iles says they’ll be giving away lifetime hunting and fishing licenses for those 18 and under at all four events; and in Baton Rouge, they will be holding a free fishing tournament.
“It’s open to kids 12 and under; and for the first 100 kids who get there, we’re giving away a rod and reel,” Iles said.
Iles says through the years, people who attend these National Hunting and Fishing Day events are amazed at how educational they are.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say, ‘Oh, I didn’t realize that about deer hunting or duck hunting.’ We have a bear education thing, too. We kind of pull the veil back a little bit to show people exactly what we do,” Iles noted.
