A Louisiana lawmaker is proposing a specialty license plate honoring Dolly Parton, with a portion of the proceeds going toward the country music legend’s signature literacy initiative.
Chalmette Representative Michael Bayham plans to file legislation in the upcoming legislative session that would create a Dolly Parton license plate. The proposal comes on September 25, which some fans are celebrating as “Dolly Parton Day” because of the date — 9/25.
Under Bayham’s proposal, $25 from the registration of each specialty plate would go to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children.
Bayham says the license plate would help bring the program to more children across Louisiana.
“Looking to provide a revenue stream for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library foundation, which provides books to people across Louisiana,” Bayham said.
Bayham also says the plate would give Dolly Parton fans a way to honor the singer, actress and philanthropist.
“We would like to give her fans an opportunity to keep her legacy and memory alive through a specialty plate that part of the fund will go to the Imagination Library Foundation in Louisiana,” Bayham said.
Bayham is expected to announce the legislation at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium in New Orleans. Members of the Krewe of Dolly are joining him for the announcement.
Bayham says he does not anticipate significant opposition to the proposal.
“I think a lot of legislators would have a tough time explaining their vote to their wife if they were against it,” Bayham said.
