Today is the last day of early voting for the November 3rd election. One of the key races is in the Fifth Congressional District, in which six Republicans are vying for the open seat. Yesterday, three of them attended a candidate forum hosted by the Baton Rouge Press Club. Gabe Firment says he supports the Medicaid work requirement provision in the Big Beautiful Bill.
“If you’re an able-bodied adult who’s able to work, you need to be working; you need to be pursuing an education, doing something to make yourself a productive citizen,” Firment said.
On saving Social Security, Austin Magee says instead of increasing the wealth cap as Democrats are calling for, the government should redirect money to Social Security from things that the U.S. should have no business spending taxpayer money on.
“We’re using our money for never-ending foreign wars. We’re using our money to subsidize socialism overseas. We’re using our money, billions with a ‘B,’ for circumcision surgery in sub-Saharan Africa,” Magee explained.
While Magee says he would go against his party on an issue if it hurts his constituents, Michael Echols says it’s important for Republicans to stick together.
“As it relates to the Democratic socialists, we have to protect our country based on what ideas they are pushing right now. They have literally, in one generation, the ability to threaten not only our democracy, but the whole concept of what America is,” Echols said.
Stewart Cathey, Misti Cordell and Omar Dantzler are the other Republicans running; they did not appear at the forum. There are also three Democrats on the open primary ballot.
