Authorities are investigating the death of a dog that was dragged behind a vehicle on Sunday afternoon. East Feliciana Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Greg Phares says deputies were alerted by a concerned resident who saw the incident while in the Village of Wilson.
“The vehicle used appears to be a rental vehicle, so it is a little more difficult to determine who was in it as opposed to it being registered to a private individual,” said Phares.
Wilson is about 50 minutes north of Baton Rouge.
Phares says they are conducting a criminal investigation, and are working under the assumption that the dog may not have been dead when it was first tied to the vehicle.
“We need to find out what was going on, we need to find out if the dog was actually killed by the act, or if it was actually dead at the time,” said Phares.
Phares says the nature of the incident surpassed the work of the SPCA and made it an issue for law enforcement.
“The SPCA or a similar group would get involved if an animal is observed to be in a poor condition, or ill, or not being properly cared for,” said Phares. “Clearly this dog is dead.”
