Those interested in a career in the medical marijuana industry will have their shot today at Southern University. The college is hosting a job fair for it’s medical marijuana program starting at 4 pm.
Illera Holistic Healthcare is Southern’s grower, and CEO Dr. Chanda Macias says they have administrative and hands-on positions.
“For trimming, packing, extracting, and actually the cultivation of the plant,” says Macias. “We’re also looking for positions in community outreach and education and sales.”
They’ll be hiring for ten positions today and an additional 20 positions in the near future.
Macias says since medical marijuana is so new, you won’t need the years of experience employers in other industries seem to always want. That being said having a green thumb certainly won’t hurt your chances.
“It doesn’t hurt that these candidates bring a background in horticulture or other farming techniques,” says Macias who adds “What’s really important is that they are eager to learn.”
Applicants will have to pass a state background check, and all available positions are full-time with pay starting at 40,000 a year for some positions, and up to six figures for others.
Macias says it’s a great opportunity to get your foot in the door of an industry that’s seen exceptional growth over the past few years.
“The medical marijuana industry is popular not only in Louisiana but nationwide do to the fact that medical marijuana really helps with healthcare needs,” says Macias.
Southern is one of two authorized growers in the state. The other, LSU and GB Sciences, have product that is now available at select pharmacies statewide.
