A Denham Springs man is under arrest for stealing an electric shopping cart from a Walmart in Houma, allegedly to avoid getting a DWI.
Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson John DeSantis says 32-year-old Brice Kendell Williams had parked at one bar, started drinking, then decided to steal the cart and drive it to another bar.
“He did not want to drive his pickup truck to the next bar that he was going to, because he was afraid he might get a DWI,” says DeSantis.
Deputies were alerted to the alleged theft by a security guard at the bar.
But DeSantis says there’s a problem with Mr. Williams’ logic; he still could’ve been charged with a DWI for drunk driving the cart.
“People have gotten DWIs on lawnmowers,” says DeSantis.
DeSantis says nothing in Mr. Williams’ report indicated that he had a disability that would have warranted use of the cart.
And Mr. Williams had to drive the cart more than a half-mile down the road, which could have led to a potentially fatal accident.
“He would have had, in the nighttime especially, the potential of being struck by a vehicle himself,” says DeSantis.
Williams is facing felony unaut
horized use of a moveable and a $2,500 bond.
