To the surprise of some LSU fans, the Tigers are not number one in the first college football playoff ranking for the 2019 season. The selection committee ranked Ohio State ahead of LSU and Alabama is third. Tiger Rag Editor Ron Higgins says he’s not surprised with the Buckeyes getting the top spot.
“I’ve done the mock committee and it comes down to an eye test and sometimes there are football coaches on that committee who just think one team looks better than the other right now overall,” said Higgins. “Maybe Ohio State has played better overall as far as offense and defense.”
Higgins says it’s probably better for LSU that they are ranked second behind Ohio State.
“The team that is usually ranked number one in the first poll, never wins a national championship, number two does,” said Higgins. “The last three teams who were number two have won the national championship, so LSU should feel pretty good about that.”
Penn State is ranked fourth in the first college football playoff rankings, the defending national champion Clemson Tigers are fifth. So two teams from the SEC and Big 10 are in the top four, but Higgins says that will change.
“It’s like every conference has its own mini playoff within the conference, they all knock each other off, it all sorts itself out,” said Higgins.
This Saturday, LSU is at Alabama. Penn State visits #17 Minnesota.
