The American Farm Bureau finds that Louisiana residents can expect to pay $47.54 for a Thanksgiving dinner that caters to a party of ten. That’s $1.37 less than the national average price of $48.91. Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation spokesperson Avery Davidson says a 16-pound turkey is about $2 less than the national average.
“As you get closer to the Thanksgiving holiday, you can find some specials out there and be able to save a whole lot more,” said Davidson.
Davidson says for three pounds of sweet potatoes, Louisiana residents can expect to spend about $1.43 compared to just over $3 around the rest of the country.
“I think that is because we have some really good sweet potato farmers here in Louisiana who supply everything locally. You can even go to some of their farms and buy directly from them,” said Davidson.
The classic dinner consists of eleven items. For many of the sides, Louisiana residents may be paying slightly higher than the national average. Davidson says when it comes to dessert, the Bayou State is in line with the rest of the nation.
“You are going to want the pumpkin pie mix. The 30 ounce can is going to be about $4.07 and the frozen pie shells to be able to put that into, a package of two will cost you about $2.17,” said Davidson.
The farmer’s share of Thanksgiving food spending is about eight cents on the dollar, meaning farmers will see only $3.80 for each meal.
