Quarterback Joe Burrow delivered a memorable and tearful Heisman Trophy acceptance speech on Saturday night after he became only the second Tiger to win the prestigious award. He started his speech by thanking his offensive line and ended it thanking Coach Ed Orgeron who showed faith in him.
“Can you imagine a guy like Coach “O” giving me the keys to his football program, he just means so much to me and my family and to LSU, I sure hope they give him a lifetime contract, he deserves it,” said Burrow.
Burrow won the Heisman by a landslide over three other finalists. It’s the largest margin of victory in the 85-year history of the award. He also received the highest percentage of first-place votes and the highest percentage of possible points, 94-percentage. After his speech, Burrow said it’s a dream come true.
“This is what little kids dream of doing when I envision myself growing up playing football, I envision myself on that stage and being the quarterback of the number one team in the country getting ready to play for a national title,” said Burrow.
Burrow describes himself as just a man from Athens, Ohio, who faced adversity when he had to transfer from his home state school to play at a school he didn’t know much about. He says his story shows that hard work pays off.
“I knew the kind of work I put in for 10 years, I knew the kind of person I was, I knew the kind of player that I could be and I just kept faith in my preparation and offseason work,” said Burrow.
After a week of traveling to different cities and receiving various awards, Burrow says he’s ready to get to work and prepare for the national semifinal game against Oklahoma on December 28th.
