Erath Representative Blake Miguez is taking over as the new House Republican Caucus Chairman.
Republicans are two votes shy of a supermajority in the House and Miguez says the key to their success in the upcoming session will be creating a unified Republican block that can act as one.
“There will be challenges ahead, but the most important thing right now is for Republicans to unite, because the people back home in each of our districts said you have a mandate, we gave you a near supermajority, and we want you to fix Louisiana,” says Miguez.
The Erath Republican is replacing Alexandria Representative Lance Harris in the position.
Miguez expects the House to produce quite a bit of conservative legislation and hopes Governor Edwards, who has tangled with House leaders for years, won’t be an obstructionist with his veto power.
“Now with a supermajority in the Senate, and a near supermajority in the House we will be in a position of power to let the Governor know what our priorities are, and I hope that he is able to accept those priorities,” says Miguez.
Miguez echoed sentiments similar to those of new GOP Senate Caucus Chair Sharon Hewitt, who singled out a few early policy priorities.
“Tax reform, spending reform, TORT reform, as Republicans we want to lead and do anything that we can to make sure that Louisiana is successful,” says Miguez.
The 38-year-old was first elected in 2015.
