New Orleans Police say 21-year-old Kentrell Baham faces a second-degree murder charge after fatally shooting a Walmart employee last night inside the store. NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson describes what happened inside the Walmart located in Gentilly.
“This individual walked into this Walmart and discharged his firearm upon this individual striking him in the chest, the victim was transported to the hospital where he later expired,” said Ferguson.
A second victim was shot in the foot. Ferguson says a brave officer working security detail apprehended Baham.
“He immediately approached and apprehended this individual and took him into custody, which may have saved many other lives in this business,” said Ferguson.
Hundreds of shoppers were in the store at the time of the shooting.
Today the store is closed and grief counselors are available for employees.
Ferguson did not provide a motive for the shooting.
“This was a very brazen incident which you see an individual walk into a business this time of the evening, with hundreds of customers inside this business, armed with a weapon and willing to cause someone harm,” said Ferguson.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
