It’s Martin Luther King Junior Day, a day off for some and for others a “day on” dedicated to community service. Volunteer Louisiana spokesperson Kori Chisham says volunteers in Louisiana create a billion dollars of economic impact annually, and that number continues to grow.
“We have over 900,000 people volunteer every year in Louisiana, and my hope is that we can hit that one million mark someday,” says Chisham.
If you’re looking to volunteer, Chisham recommends visiting www.volunteerlouisiana.gov or www.mlkday.gov .
“There’s a big event in Baton Rouge going on that the Walls Project is going to be working on cleanup and blight, and a lot of outdoor projects,” says Chisham
It’s the 25th anniversary of the designation of Martin Luther King Day as an official federal holiday, and Chisham says volunteering is the best way to honor this American legend’s life.
“The MLK Day of service is a really big day nationwide day of service, and it is the only federal holiday to be designated as a day of service,” says Chisham.
King would have been 91 today and was assassinated 51 years ago.
