Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson, 4th Congressional District
Northwest Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson is named to President Trump’s impeachment defense team in the ongoing Senate removal trial.
The Senate will vote on trial rules today, and while it looks like this could be a very brief trial in the Upper Chamber, Johnson says the prosecution will have all the time it needs to make a case.
“The Democrats, the House Managers, the prosecutors as it were, will have 24 hours to put on their case, the best case they can. They can introduce anything they want to put on that case, and it should be ample time to do it,” says Johnson.
Afterward, the President’s team will be allowed to respond.
Johnson vocally defended the administration in the House in his position on the House Intelligence Committee during impeachment hearings. He looks set to reprise that role, in a way.
“My role will be not so much in the court, but in the court of public opinion, and that is to assist the White House and President in reinforcing the arguments in the media and in the follow up questions that come through the trial proceedings,” says Johnson.
The Congressman expects the President will be swiftly acquitted of the two impeachment charges. He says the accusations are based on information assembled by Congressman Adam Schiff.
“He cherry-picked certain pieces of that, he put out just little excerpts that he individually and unilaterally chose because it advanced a narrative that he wanted to paint,” says Johnson.
The trial is now ongoing.
