The Louisiana Department of Education will continue serving meals during the statewide school shutdown. Assistant State Superintendent Catherine Pozniak says food operations will be modified to serve as many families as possible.
“We know that our schools are providing many services in addition to the academic educational services they provide to children every day, including food and nutrition and meals,” said Pozniak.
Some areas are already providing the services today. Pozniak says the food service is made possible by waivers from the federal government, adding that more schools are working out the details of exactly how to best serve food.
“We have already published online a listing of 21 parishes that are offering meal services across 150 sites. We fully expect that this will get up to 100% of parishes in the next three to four days,” said Pozniak.
Pozniak says the meals at these sites are open to all children, regardless of where they are enrolled in school.
“All children, from ages 18 and under. It also includes overage students that are enrolled in K-12 public schools, including students with disabilities up to the age of 22,” said Pozniak.
