A major change is coming with where high school championship games will be played. LHSAA principals voted on Friday to allow “select” schools to host their title games in football, basketball, baseball and softball at sites separate from public schools. Teurlings Catholic Principal Mike Boyer calls it a good day for the LHSAA.
“What we are able to do now is we are able to bring back state championships into communities and have community support throughout the state.”
Boyer says the school that has the higher seed in the championship game will decide where the game will be held.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean that they would play at the home site of the host because I think most people would try to find the best venue in their area to host and to be able to handle a much larger crowd.”
The result of today’s vote means that private schools might not be able to play for a state football championship in the Mercedes Benz Superdome anymore. But Boyer says depending on what the school with the highest seed decides, the title game could still be held at a big venue.
“Most of them are going to be a collegiate venue, and they would be loving the opportunity to bring people into their facilities and on their campus to see what they have. I think that is a win-win for the colleges.”
