Governor Edwards warns healthcare capacity in the New Orleans area could be surpassed within the next seven to ten days under a worst-case COVID-19 spread scenario.
Edwards says it is early but the region’s trajectory of case growth is basically the same as Italy’s was in the same period of the outbreak.
“If you think that just because we are the United States of America that we cannot possibly get to where Italy is today then I would ask you on what assumption are you making that,” said Edwards.
Italy has surpassed China to lead the world in COVID-19 related deaths at 3,405.
Coronavirus has claimed ten lives in Louisiana and WWL-TV reports St. Tammany Parish has its first death.
The governor says it’s an unusual disaster situation for the state to be in because normally in times of crisis we can call on help from the outside, but now that’s not the case.
“We are not going to be getting the assistance from our sister states as we normally would and the federal government is doing the best that it can but they are having to do that across the entire country,” said Edwards.
Edwards is concerned about not having enough health care workers, hospital beds and ventilators and expressed that concern with the President during a video conference call with other governors on Thursday.
