Louisiana residents are used to hunkering down for floods and hurricanes, but staying at home through April 13th because of a pandemic is a daunting task for most. LSU AgCenter registered dietitian Sandra May says it is important to stock up on nonperishables, but you may have to think outside the box for other items.
“If you run out of bread, do you have any flour to make bread? Or there’s no bread on the shelves right now. So you might want to be creative and think about making those things that you cannot find on the shelves,” said May.
While it’s a good idea to have some snacks, May says it’s important not to go crazy with junk food.
“We all need to have a little bit of that every now and then, but those are the types of things that we want to stay away from or at least limit those things, sodas and chips and things like that,” said May.
May says it is vital to have a balanced diet making up the supplies in an effort to keep the immune system at peak performance.
“Your front line is fruits and vegetables in whatever form you can find them or whatever form you feel easy about,” said May.
