Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson’s professional franchises may be shut down, but she’s busy trying to help those impacted by COVID-19 through her Community Assistance Fund. Benson donated one million dollars to the fund and says she’s inspired by the amount of charity and solidarity she’s seeing in New Orleans.
“Some of the young people might not remember some of the challenges us veterans have been through but we understand how tough it has been and we will always come back,” said Benson.
Part of the fund will go towards helping gig economy workers who’ve lost their jobs in crisis.
Benson highlighted the generosity of Pels rookie sensation Zion Williamson, who volunteered to cover 30 days of Smoothie King Center worker’s salaries.
“That is such an incredible gesture on his part, it just shows you his background and his family. I’m so honored to have him working with us, he is just such an incredible young man,” said Benson.
Benson is asking anyone who can to donate to charitable causes in the city during this trying time, and to follow the Governor’s order.
“Just please follow the guidelines, I know it’s difficult but we must follow the guidelines,” said Benson.
