The United Cajun Navy is mobilizing at L’Auberge Casino and Hotel in Baton Rouge ahead of what is expected to be a likely flooding event brought by Barry’s rainfall.
Founder Todd Terrell says the riverboat casino is a good spot to gather the Navy at, with it’s central location in the soon-to-be inundated region.
“We’re going to mobilize there for a staging area for boats and trailers. It’s got a good location; we can mobilize between Baton Rouge and New Orleans pretty quickly from there.”
The casino is located on in south Baton Rouge.
They’re putting the call out for additional volunteers to assist in post storm flood rescue and recovery, but Terrell says with the conditions they are expecting, not all boats will be a good fit…
“Down here we need a lot of the surface drives (motors) and airboats and that kind of stuff. A lot of people want to volunteer, but they want to bring a bass boat or something like that, and you know… you’re running over mailboxes and those kinds of things.”
Terrell says if you are interested in volunteering with the Navy, go to their Facebook page and leave a message, or download an app called ZELLO.
“Once you download that app, go to a group called volunteer Louisiana. When you go there, introduce yourself and tell us what you’ve got. Some people have boats, and some people just have hands.”
