LSU is preparing to pare down to nothing but essential staff on campus after the Governor’s shelter in place order goes into effect at 5 PM.
Interim President Dr. Thomas Galligan says while nearly all students have been removed from the campus, not every student has been so lucky.
“We will have some students still in residence halls and apartments because they cannot go home, so there will be limited staff taking care of them,” says Galligan.
Some food service staff serving carryout bags and other select staff will also be permitted on campus.
The campus is set to remain a ghost town through the end of the spring semester but Galligan says they’re willing to be flexible if the situation improves.
“If we do what we are told to do which is to stay in and stay six feet apart, and we do flatten the curve of the disease then maybe aspects of the campus can stay open until the end of the semester,” says Galligan.
Professors will be allowed on campus, with permission, until 5 PM today.
Many are worried some of LSU’s most essential staff may not be taking the field come August if COVID-19 is still an issue by them. Galligan says if football must be canceled, they will, but hopefully, it won’t.
“If we have to temporarily survive without various programs we will do so, but I hope to god that by the fall that we are ready to get back to some semblance of normal life,” says Galligan.
The football program brought in 55 million dollars last year.
