Food stamp recipients who are not currently receiving the maximum total possible on their SNAP cards will now start receiving the max.
Department of Children and Family Services Secretary Marketa Garner Walters says only 37% of recipients currently receive the maximum, so this announcement will impact 265,000 households in Louisiana. An estimated 43-million dollars extra per month in federal food assistance.
“It will be loaded Tuesday night for the March benefits, and it will be loaded again in April on April 17th for the April benefits,” says Walters.
The max for a single individual recipient is $194 a month.
The Department is also waiving redeterminations, interviews, and the work requirements for SNAP. Walters says if you have SNAP, you don’t have to worry about losing it right now.
“You do not have to call or email or text or worry about that,” says Walters.
Walters says if you’re interested in applying for food stamps, know the call center capacity is limited right now and your best bet is visiting DCFS.LA.GOV/GetSnap, or text get SNAP to 898-211.
“We are having about three and a half times the normal amount of SNAP applications as we do normally,” says Walters.
