Some schools are organizing drive-through pickup for caps, gowns, and class rings for juniors and seniors who are missing out on some of the seminal events of their high school years.
Jostens sales rep Jim Rabb says his company is working with schools to establish drive-by locations where parents can bring their kids to get some semblance of pomp and circumstance.
“They stay in their cars and we put it in their passenger side or trunk, whatever they prefer and then we clap for them and they start honking their horns. We try to make it as fun as possible,” said Rabb.
For many kids, these drive-throughs are the first time they’ve seen their fellow students and teachers in person, and Raab says most of them are run by a familiar face.
“Most of the places we’ve been, the principal has actually been there to greet the kids because they haven’t seen them in a month and they are anxious to see their children as they call them,” said Rabb.
Raab says they’ve taken precautions to maintain social distancing and all employees are wearing at least gloves. He says it’s not mandatory, but if you do come he asks you to put on a mask.
“A lot of people do, when they come in their car, have a mask on or have a glove, but again we just try to put it in their front seat so they don’t have to touch anything, so we try to make it as safe as possible,” said Rabb.
