As expected the Cincinnati Bengals selected quarterback Joe Burrow with the number one pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Burrow becomes the third LSU Tiger to be picked number one, JaMarcus Russell and Billy Cannon are the other two. The Heisman Trophy winner says he’s ready to go to work.
“It doesn’t matter where you get picked, I could have been the 189th pick, I could be number one, I am going to work the exact same and try to be the best quarterback I could be for this city,” said Burrow.
Burrow was the first pick in the virtual draft. Commissioner Roger Goodell, general managers, coaches and the players were all at their own homes, instead of Las Vegas where the draft was supposed to be held. Burrow says he didn’t mind hanging out at his home in Athens, Ohio.
“As soon as the pick came in, people were driving by the house, honking their horns, screaming out the window so that’s the kind of place its here” said Burrow.
Burrow will have to compete with veteran Andy Dalton in order to be the starting quarterback. The 23-year-old looks forward to the competition.
“I’m going to have get mental reps for missing these rookie mini-camps and OTAs, I am going to have go through this playbook really hard and go through the process of calling plays in the huddle,” said Burrow.
LSU linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson was the next former Tiger to be taken. Jacksonville used the 20th pick to select the speedy pass rusher. A couple of picks later, Minnesota drafted wide receiver Justin Jefferson. With the 28th overall pick, Baltimore picked linebacker Patrick Queen.
The first round ended with Super Bowl champion Chiefs selecting running back Clyde-Edwards Helaire.
The five LSU Tigers selected in the first round is a school record.
The Saints used the 24th pick to take center Cesar Ruiz out of Michigan.
