Parts of southeast Louisiana are drying out today after over a foot of rain fell in an area north of Lake Ponchartrain. Phil Grigsby with the National Weather Service in Slidell says their highest rainfall total was 15 inches.
“The highest rainfall fell basically right over the Goodbee/Bedico area there, where there was about 15 inches of rain, but even over in Covington and areas up around Folsom, we had rainfall reports of up to 10 inches,” said Grigsby.
Grigsby says up to ten inches of rain fell in St. Charles Parish.
Grigsby says area rivers continue to rise. He says the Tchefuncte River, which starts in Tangiaphoa Parish and drains into Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany will crest at a major flood stage level. He says water has already flowed into some homes.
“During the heavy rain event, some businesses and homes took on water there on the Northshore around Madisonville and also in Ormond Estates down in St. Charles Parish,” said Grigsby.
A handful of people had to be rescued from their homes last night as the water kept rising. High water has also closed some roads and there are also power outages.
Grigsby says heavy rain bands from a low-pressure system produced the flooding and more rain is in the forecast.
“It looks like the same conditions as far as heavy rain potential that we saw yestersday and hopefully won’t have that banding like we had last evening,” said Grigsby.
