Movies theatres could have opened over the weekend during the Governor’s Phase One reopening plan, however most of the marquees remain dark. President of the Tristate Independent Theatre Association, Adam Holland says theaters didn’t know when Phase One would actually go into effect until the announcement on May 11th and they also have to coordinate with studios for product.
“Due to the studio’s release calendar, we’re not going to have any new product until early to mid-July,” says Holland
Due to a lack of new releases to show and business procedures that must be implemented to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Holland says a most theaters will be opening next.
“Around that first week in June some of them are going mid-June for an opening, to give our employees a training in the new procedures that will have to be implemented due to this virus,” says Holland.
Holland says when theaters do reopen, you’ll see some changes like, sneeze guards at the concession stand and more ushers.
“But we’ll have ushers in the auditoriums to make that there are two to three seats in between parties to make sure we are able to accomplish the separations that have been requested by the orders,” says Holland.
Holland is confident the industry will survive because people still prefer to watch movies in a theater.
