On Monday, the Louisiana Department of Health reported 15 new COVID-19 fatalities, bringing the state’s total death toll to 2,440. On Sunday, the state reported just 12 fatalities. Governor John Bel Edwards says it’s been since the end of March that the state has reported death totals this low since the end of March.
The total number of cases increased by 277 to 34,709.
State health officials say they’ve seen an increase in cases in the Acadiana area. The LDH is monitoring the increase carefully and this recent increase is due to outbreaks at three worksites that are not open to the public. Assistant health secretary Dr. Alex Billioux says the cluters have been found on crawfish farms involving migrant workers living in a dormitory setting.
“We have initially found one outbreak in one group of workers who work on a crawfish farm and live in dormitory like settings,” says Billioux.
About 100 people have been infected at three different farms.
LDH is also now breaking down the numbers of each nursing home with positive cases with a weekly report, detailing cases among both residents and staff as well as fatalities.
You can find that report here. It details the facility name and parish, the number of cases amoung residents, the number of cases amoung staff, and the number of deaths among residents if they have had one or more case.
LDH also issued formal guidance to all adult residential facilities Friday on prevention measures going forward. It encourages comprehensive testing of residents and staff, those with and without symptoms in all congregant settings, nursing homes, incarceration settings, and other areas.
