LSU will play Grambling and Southern for the first time ever in football. The Tigers will host the Jaguars in September 2022 and Grambling will travel to Tiger Stadium in 2023. LSU’s Executive Deputy Athletics Director Verge Ausberry says with civil unrest griping the country, they thought it was appropriate to announce these first-ever matchups against tradition rich black college football programs.
“We have to work on those relationships in our country, COVID-19, the governor made the announcement we are going to phase 2, which is good for our state and we thought this was good for the state of Louisiana,” said Ausberry.
Ausberry says they began discussing the games with Southern and Grambling a couple of years ago. He knows the fan bases for these two schools will be fired up to see their teams play in Tiger Stadium.
“We know those games will be sold out, very exciting to get their fan base here, they both travel well and they both have great bands,” said Ausberry.
Southern and Grambling will receive big paychecks to play LSU in football. Ausberry says if they are playing an F-C-S school, they’d like it to be an in-state school, especially schools with great college football traditions.
“When you talk about Southern University, Coach Ace Mumford, Mel Blount, the great players, hall of famers that went to those schools,” said Ausbery. “You look at Grambling, Coach Eddie Robinson, who is the winningest coach in football and all of the NFL Players, before integration those are the places where most of the African Americans went, don’t forget a guy like Doug Williams.”
