Research from AAA shows many drivers are partaking in dangerous behaviors behind the wheel, even though they know better. AAA spokesperson Don Redman says 96% of drivers admitted that driving while texting is extremely or very dangerous, but many admit to still being guilty of doing so.
“We’re talking about 40% admitting that, yeah, they’ve texted in the last 30 days before that survey and we see that repeatedly whether it’s speeding, texting, or talking on the phone, or running redlights,” said Redman.
Redman says those involved in recent crashes admit they are still engaging in dangerous activities and doing so more than those not involved in crashes.
“Those who were just involved in a recent crash, 50% says they have talked on a handheld device while driving in the past month, versus 42% who have not been in a crash recently,” said Redman.
43% of those involved in a recent crash admit to texting while driving in the past month versus 27% of those not involved in crashes.
Redman recommends slowing down, staying alert, and putting your phone away while driving, as many on the roads are shaking off the rust from reduced driving during the pandemic.
“There a little rusty, perhaps not checking their blindspots, maybe being distracted, hurrying up, talking to people on the phone, again that’s one of the biggest issues we have right now,” said Redman.
