The U-S Army Corps of Engineers blue roof program is starting up in six Laura-impacted parishes with the aim of allowing storm victims to remain in their home while permanent repairs are made. Governor John Bel Edwards says blue roofs were common after Katrina and just like in 2005 it’s a free service
“There is going to be some percentage of residences that can be made safe, secure, and habitable with this temporary roof,” said Edwards.
Homes in Cameron, Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis, Beauregard, Allen and Vernon parishes could be eligible for blue roof installation.
Edwards warns not every house will be eligible for installation as some properties have suffered too much damage. If you are eligible you’ll have to allow installation teams on your property.
“Homeowners are going to have to sign the right of entry to allow them to do the inspection and the work if they are candidates for the blue roof program,” says Edwards.
Those interested in a blue roof can call 1-888-766-3258 or visit the Army Corps of Engineers website.
Edwards says allowing people to stay in their own homes is vital given the current pandemic conditions.
“It is incredibly important this temporary roofing and it is an essential part of our emergency housing plan,” says Edwards.
