More than 123,000 Louisiana residents have been registered for FEMA aid, with more than 57 million dollars distributed to Laura victims so far.
Region Six spokesperson Melissa Wilkins says residents in 16 hurricane ravaged parishes are encouraged to apply for storm damage relief.
“They can go on disasterassistance.gov, there is also a FEMA app that can be downloaded, or they can call the 1-800 number,” says Wilkins.
Wilkins says scammers are known to target victims in the wake of natural disasters and pretend to be government officials to steal your personal information. She says stay vigilant.
“We will be wearing a badge and a vest that says FEMA on it. Of course, people may be able to get a vest that says FEMA on it, but they may not be able to get a badge,” says Wilkins.
Wilkins says when you register with FEMA you’ll get an ID number that is not your social security number, so if anyone asks for your social you should be suspicious, and call 866-720-5721.
