Coach Ed Orgeron will get the national spotlight when the LSU coach’s story is told on Sunday night on CBS’s 60 minutes. Special assistant to the head coach Derek Ponamsky says production was originally set to take place in March with spring practice but got pushed back to the summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“It kind of pivoted a little bit from a straight feature on Coach O and the entire journey to us winning a national championship in January to mostly about that but also with some elements about how college football right now is dealing with COVID,” said Ponamsky.
Ponamsky says not only will viewers get a more personal look at Coach O, but they’ll get to meet his mother, Coco.
“If you’ve ever spent any time with her, you understand where Coach gets his energy from. We’re looking forward to that and one of the things that is great about this is that Coach always talks about the family aspect that we have here and so to see parts of his family and where he gets that from, it’s going to be really good for the viewer,” said Ponamsky.
Ponamsky says between this feature on 60 minutes and his new book Flip the Script that will be coming out in a few weeks, LSU fans will get a better idea of the inner workings of Coach O.
“This is going to be a very good time for people that are really curious about the idiosyncrasies of Ed Orgeron and what makes him tick. I think you’ll be able to get a little bit more of a glimpse behind the curtain of what happens with these two things,” said Ponamsky.
60 Minutes airs Sunday night at 6:30 on CBS.
