The Saints had a double digit lead in Las Vegas on Monday night, but the Raiders got rolling in their new stadium and defeated New Orleans 34-24. For the second straight week the Saints offense couldn’t get into a rhythm while the Raiders had the ball for 36-plus minutes. Coach Sean Payton says allowing the Raiders to convert 10-of-17 on third downs hurt.
“We’re going to look at third downs, we’re going to look at time of possession, the turnover right before the half, we’re going to look at a number of things, we got to do a better job coaching, I don’t think it’s going to be a real pleasant film to watch for some of our star players as well,” said Payton.
Raiders Quarterback Derek Carr threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns, while Saints Q-B Drew Brees threw for 312 yards and a touchdown. He was also intercepted once at the end of the second quarter.
“The turnover at the end of the half was unfortunate, because that probably took points off the board for us, maybe a field goal at the very least and it gave them three points,” said Brees.
The Saints defense had trouble stopping Raiders tight end Darren Waller, who had 12 catches for 103 yards and one touchdown. Also New Orleans committed ten penalties for 129 yards. Defensive end Cam Jordan says they have a lot to fix before their next game on Sunday against Green Bay.
“We don’t have the luxury for a 24-hour rule at this point we got to digest it, we got to eat this, and grow as a defense, there’s things we haven’t shown on tape so we got to correct these mistakes,” said Jordan.
New Orleans will host the Packers on on Sunday night. Green Bay has looked good in wins over the Vikings and Lions. The Saints are 1-1 on the year.
