Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin has come under fire after the state voter registration portal was shut down for “scheduled maintenance” for hours on National Voter Registration Day Tuesday. New State Democratic Party Chair Katie Bernhardt says this is a case of voter suppression.
“This is the biggest registration day and push of the year for one of the most critical elections of our lifetime and we had a huge glitch in the system if not blatant voter suppression,” said Bernhardt. “That office has a pattern of attempting to suppress the vote in recent months. He attempted multiple times to limit absentee voting during a pandemic.”
The site was down from 8 PM to 11:30 PM. Republican Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin calls it an unfortunate error and he takes full responsibility. He says the maintenance was scheduled long ago.
Ardoin reminds voters they have until October 13 to register to vote or change their party affiliation for the November 3rd presidential election.
The Secretary of State also says 90% of eligible Louisiana residents have signed up to participate.
