Two people are dead after deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office fatally shot a man they witnessed murder his girlfriend on Monday night. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says deputies arrived to find the couple in the street and arguing prior to the shooting.
“The male produced a revolver at that time and actually placed it up to the female’s neck at that period. He ended up fatally shooting the female that was on the scene here. Our deputies returned fire at that point in time and ended up killing the suspect,” said Lopinto.
Lopinto says authorities arrived at the Avondale home after receiving a 911 call from a neighbor indicating a male was beating a female.
“During that altercation and that beating that was taking place, there were several shots that were fired according to the caller that called into 911,” said Lopinto.
Deputies attempted to render aid but were unsuccessful. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The three deputies involved were unharmed.
Lopinto says it is not yet clear how many shots were fired.
“I was told by the caller and listened to the 911 call and they believe that several shots were fired before we arrived on the scene and our deputies witnessed the murder of the female that was on the scene with that shot also,” said Lopinto.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been revealed.
