The LSU football team has a 1-2 record for the first time since 1994 after getting upset at Missouri in a game that featured very little defense. The Bayou Bengals gave up 586 yards of total offense as Mizzou pulled off the 45-41 upset. Coach Ed Orgeron is not happy with what’s happening on that side of the ball.
“Really a poor showing on defense, we got to coach better number one, it starts with me, players got to make plays, couldn’t stop the run, receivers wide open down the field, it was embarrassing, we got to get it fixed,” said Orgeron.
LSU allowed a freshman quarterback in Connor Bazelak to throw for 406 yards and four touchdowns. Mizzou running back Larry Rountree rushed for 119 yards as the Tigers averaged 5.5 yards a rush.
LSU fans are pointing the finger at new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. His four-three defense was gashed in both losses. Orgeron says he still has faith in Pelini.
“I love Bo, I think Bo is going to be a great defensive coordinator he’s done it before, but we have to get better,” said Orgeron.
LSU Quarterback Myles Brennan continues to improve as he threw for 430 yards and four touchdowns. But the Tigers were 0-for-10 on third down and failed to score a game winning touchdown from the one yard line. Brennan says you can’t put all of the blame on the defense.
“Our defense fought all the way to the last second on the clock, on offense, defense and special team we have a lot to correct, I personally have a lot to fix, offensively we didn’t execute on third down like we would want to,” said Brennan.
We’ll see how much LSU can fix before their next game, which is Saturday at Florida. The fourth ranked Gators lost to 21st ranked Texas A&M 41-38 on a last second field goal.
The Tigers are the first national champion to start 1-2 since Michigan in 1998.
