Homeowners who suffered damage from Hurricane Laura and Delta will not have to pay two different “Named Storm Deductibles.” Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says most homeowner policies require a deductible for each event, but that’s not the case if the damage is from two named storms in the same season.
“And that will apply in the event that folks had damage from Hurricane Delta that already suffered damage from Hurricane Laura,” said Donelon.
In 2008, Hurricane Ike threatened the same area that was just damaged by Hurricane Gustav. That led to the Legislature copying legislation passed in Florida inspired by a similar series of events in Orlando.
If you suffered damage from Laura and have yet to pay your deductible, Donelon says you are still on the hook for whatever remains of your deductible before you can start collecting assistance.
“Any questions should be addressed to your agent or to your company or contact us,” said Donelon.
Most homeowners have already documented their Laura-related damage but Donelon says you need to re-document any Delta related damage and keep track of expenses incurred for securing your damaged home ahead of Delta.
“Keep your receipts from that effort or assistance you may have to contract with to make those temporary repairs and any supplies in order to make those repairs,” said Donelon.
