Louisiana reported its first two fatalities as a result of Hurricane Delta Sunday.
Governor Edwards said an 86-year-old man in St. Martin Parish passed away from a fire that was sparked shortly after he attempted to refuel his generator.
“It was located in a shed and we do not believe that the generator was allowed to cool before he refueled it, so I ask that you join me in praying for his family,” said Edwards.
Generators were the single biggest individual cause of death post-Laura. Edwards said to make sure it doesn’t happen to you keep them 20 feet from your home.
“Away from window and vents and crawl spaces and outside your home and garages and so forth, and please make sure that they are off for 20 minutes so that they can cool off before you refuel them,” said Edwards.
The second death was a 70-year-old woman in Iberia Parish whose death has been linked to a fire that followed a natural gas leak.
In other Delta-related news, the Corps of Engineers is turning the blue roof program back on. Edwards says they’ve surveyed the impacted area and noticed that many homes that had previously put up blue roofs had lost them during the storm.
Residents in Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Jeff Davis, Vernon, and Cameron Parishes will be eligible for the program. You can register online or call at 1-888-ROOF-BLU.
