Saturday’s LSU-Florida game has been rescheduled for December 12th in Gainesville because of a coronavirus outbreak with the Gators football team. Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin says 21 players have tested positive and they have less than 50 scholarship players available to play for Saturday.
“We’ve reached a point where we don’t think it’s appropriate to play the game this weekend,” said Stricklin.
Stricklin says the players, coaches, and staff members who have tested positive report mild symptoms or they are asymptomatic. The Florida A-D believes last week’s trip to Texas A-and-M may have helped spread the virus within the team.
“A couple of our athletes who have tested positive since coming back from that trip subsequently reported late last week they had what they thought were allergy type symptoms, one was congestion, one had a headache,” said Stricklin.
LSU Coach Ed Orgeron says player safety should be the top priority.
“If the best thing is for us not to play then we shouldn’t play,” said Orgeron.
It appears LSU could use a weekend off anyway. Orgeron says starting quarterback Myles Brennan has not practiced this week because of a shoulder injury.
“He’s doubtful, I think that maybe by Friday he’ll come around, he didn’t practice yesterday and he’s not going to practice today, I haven’t talked to Jack yet but I know he’s not practicing today, hopefully, he’ll practice towards the end of the week.”
