Tropical Storm Zeta is expected to make landfall near southeast Louisiana on Wednesday night as a category 1 hurricane. Residents in the area are bracing for impact as Louisiana will be hit by yet another storm. John Rahaim is the Director of Emergency Preparedness for St. Bernard parish and he says that what is really putting citizens on edge is the fact that this storm will hit at night.
“It’s expected to make landfall tomorrow night with the majority of strong winds coming at 9, 10, 11, 12 at night, that’s the worst time for it to hit because you don’t know what’s going on, you can’t see all you can do is hear.”
Zeta is projected to be a fast-moving storm which should help reduce the damage, however, when the storm finally passes through, Rahaim says that he expects a wide variety of damage to be present in the area.
“We do expect power outages with this type of wind, we expect some rain, damage from wind, power outages, and flooding of lower St. Bernard so we expect a little bit of each one of these areas of the storm.”
St. Bernard is not the only parish preparing for the storm, Lieutenant Brennan Matherne with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says that Lafourche parish is expecting significant winds to be the biggest impact from this storm.
“For this storm we’re looking at this as a wind event, it’s going to be a fast-moving storm so we don’t expect any lingering issues.”
Due to the expected high winds, Lt. Matherne advises residents to tie down any loose furniture around their home.
“Secure loose items around your home including patio furniture and Halloween decorations and ensure that ditches and catch spaces are free of debris.”
