An effort to deliver turkeys to residents in the beleaguered City of Lake Charles was a big success, with the “Mayor’s Turkey Challenge” bringing over 2,000 birds to needy residents.
Mayor Nic Hunter said after the town got smashed by Hurricanes Laura and Delta they found a lot of folks in need of help for Thanksgiving. They set a modest goal and blew right past it.
“When we launched it we were not quite sure if we would get a good response because of what everyone is going through and because so many businesses are struggling,” said Hunter. “Our hope was maybe we would get a couple hundred turkeys.”
The drive saw people donate money to the United Way of Southwest Louisiana to help buy the birds. Hunter said one out of state business in particular made a big impact.
“It was just awesome and I have to give a big shout out to a group out of Houston, Ceva Logistics provided a huge amount of turkeys so it was a great success,” said Hunter.
Hunter says the United Way determined who was most in need and distributed the birds to those most in need last week.
