Food banks across the country are being inundated with requests for aid and are seeking your help on this Giving Tuesday.
Second Harvest Food Bank spokesperson Jay Vise said families are struggling with federal benefits dried up and unemployment running out.
“It is definitely going to be a tough holiday food-wise for a lot of people, we have seen record levels of food uncertainty and need for food at our pantries across Louisiana,” said Vise.
Over the past few weeks, there have been a growing number of pictures from foodbanks in other states showing cars lined up as far as the eye can see. Vise said they’re seeing that here as well.
“We do a major distribution every week at a minor league ballpark at their parking lot near New Orleans (Zephyr Field), and we have seen thousands of families lining up. It is really heartbreaking,” said Vise.
Vise said they’d love for the public to make any donations they can afford at this time but even more critically they could use some extra hands. He says they’ve worked hard to make it a COVID safe space.
“We have to take extra precautions, of course, PPE and taking temperatures and things like that but we have had increased demand for food, we have had a lot more poundage going out the door, and we could not do it without our volunteers,” said Vise.
