LSU signed 19 players on the first day of the early signing period and Tiger Rag Editor Ron Higgins says it was a good day for Coach Ed Orgeron and his recruiting staff.
“This is really a nice class that Ed has put together so far, two five-stars and mostly the rest are four-stars,” said Orgeron.
The two five-star recruits are Terrebonne Defensive tackle Maason Smith and Lafayette Christian Safety Sage Ryan. Alabama was after both prospects.
LSU lost a couple of commits to the Crimson Tide, Texas receiver JoJo Earle and defensive end Keanu Koht.
Higgins says losing recruits happens, but LSU responded well.
“LSU went out and responded by flipping two Mississippi State recruits, including a junior college linebacker that a lot of people wanted,” said Higgins.
That linebacker is Noavonteque Strong from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He’s rated as the number one JUCO linebacker prospect. Wide receiver Malik Nabers also signed with LSU after previously pledging to Mississippi State. Nabers didn’t play this past season after transferring from Comeaux to Southside High School in Lafayette.
Garrett Dellinger is LSU’s lone offensive lineman signee and while there’s still a lot of top linemen uncommitted, Higgins thinks LSU will look for transfers to fill the need at O-line.
“Well it comes to offensive linemen, I think they are going to shop for transfers and graduate transfers, they’ll go out in what we call the waiver wire now in college football, which is the portal,” said Higgins.
LSU can sign six more players in this class. Orgeron said on his radio show that he may sign three or four more offensive linemen.
24-7 sports ranks LSU’s recruiting class as the fourth-best in the nation. Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia are the top three.
