Former Auburn Coach Terry Bowden has been named the new head football coach at U-L-M. Bowden coached at Auburn from 1993 to 1998, winning 47 games in six seasons. . Monroe News-Star sports reporter Adam Hunsucker says it’s a surprise to see the Warhawks hire a 64-year-old coach.
“The athletic director and other folks around this job that they were looking for young and upcoming, somebody that can use ULM as a stepping stone to move on and really relate to the kids, but that kind of shifted last weekend,” said Hunsucker.
Bowden also had a successful three-year stint at North Alabama. His last head coaching job was at Akron where he went 32-52 in seven seasons and was fired after the 2018 season. He’s the son of legendary Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden. Hunsucker says the Bowden name brings attention to the Warhawk football program.
“When you look at this fan base, they are going to see the Bowden name, I think the older fans that means a lot to them, the younger fans I’m not quite so sure, I think there’s a little divide on that right now,” said Hunsucker.
Bowden takes over a program that went 0-10 in 2020. Hunsucker says the Warhawks are also short on players and financial resources.
“I think this going to be a long-term project for Terry, he wanted to get back in and now he’s back in, he’s got him one now.
