The House of Representatives delivered Articles of Impeachment against former President Trump to the Senate Monday night.
Senator Bill Cassidy is set to be a juror in an impeachment trial for the second time in a year, and a juror for the only President to be impeached twice.
“I just tell people, I’ll listen to the evidence and seek out as much as possible what the truth is and that will determine how I vote,” said Cassidy.
Trump is being impeached on allegations that he incited an insurrection on January 6th. The claims are he egged on a crowd of his supporters at a D.C. Stop the Steal rally to go to the US Capitol and disrupt President Biden’s certification.
Cassidy said the worst-case scenario for Trump is that evidence is produced showing he was briefed on the potential for violence resulting from the rally he held before the Capitol Riot. He also laid out an alternative view of what may happened on January 6th.
“If on the other hand there is testimony that the President didn’t know any of this and he was basically just giving a, as you would at a football game, a fight! fight! fight! that is another set,” said Cassidy. “I am not going to pre-judge I am going to listen to the evidence.”
Four rioters and one Capitol Hill police officer died during the riot.
The trial is set to begin in earnest the week of February 8th but before that can proceed Cassidy said there’s a key question that must be answered.
“Is it constitutional to impeach a President who has already left office? There is different precedent in our nation’s history, that is one of the things that will be considered,” said Cassidy.
