If it were not for the coronavirus pandemic, this would be the first big weekend of Mardi Gras parades. But there are no parades and Governor John Bel Edwards is strongly urging residents not to gather in large groups during the carnival season.
“Quite frankly it’s irresponsible, it’s selfish, we are better than that, we need to do better,” said Edwards. “I have no doubt it will lead to another surge if we don’t get it under control very quickly.”
The state is sending additional state troopers, staff from the fire marshal’s office, and A-T-C to enforce COVID-19 restrictions in New Orleans. Hotel bookings are up in the Big Easy over the next two weekends and Edwards has this message for visitors.
“If people think they are going to come to Louisiana and then engage in the same kind of activities they would have pre-pandemic then they are mistaken and quite frankly they are not welcomed here to do that,” said Edwards.
Edwards says Super Bowl viewing parties are also not a good idea on Sunday.
“Unfortunately most people Super Bowl activities look a lot like a holiday meal, where people from multiple households gather in one place, indoors, for extended periods of time, it’s just not safe,” said Edwards.
