This history-making winter weather has been responsible for at least three deaths in Louisiana. Governor John Bel Edwards says both fatalities took place in Lafayette Parish.
“A 50-year-old gentleman in the Carencro area sustained a fatal head injury when he slipped on ice and obviously that’s very tragic,” said Edwards.
The other death occurred in the city of Lafayette. Lafayette Police Sergeant Wayne Griffin says 74-year-old Mary Guillory died after leaving a residence at around 1 AM Tuesday morning.
“We think she was suffering from some type of medical episode and she succumbed to the extreme weather conditions,” said Griffin.
Guillory may have suffered from dementia.
A homeless shelter by the name of Hope House says a homeless man died in downtown Shreveport on Monday night.
Temperatures dropped into the single digits on Monday. In a Facebook, Hope House says the man who froze to death came to the House House each morning for coffee and attended monthly bible sessions.
He was reportedly found in a sitting position slumped over against the brick wall of a business downtown.
